Probot Development Environment Setup

This guide will help you set up a development environment for your Probot robot, allowing you to develop ROS 2 nodes that utilize the robot's existing functionalities.

Prerequisites

To develop new nodes, you will need a machine (PC, laptop, or Raspberry Pi) running the same version of ROS 2 that is currently installed on the robot:
➡️ ROS 2 Humble Hawksbill

Network Configuration

ROS 2 uses multicast by default to enable communication between devices on the same subnet. Make sure that multicasting is enabled on your network.

ROS 2 is built on the ROS Middleware (RMW) layer, which can be implemented in various ways. All implementations rely on the DDS (Data Distribution Service) pub-sub framework, ensuring seamless communication between different ROS 2 nodes on the same network.

Application Development and Testing

After building your application, you can test it using one of the following methods supported by ROS 2:

✅ Option 1: With the Physical Robot

  • Power on the robot.
  • Connect your development machine to the same subnet as the robot.
  • Your application will communicate with the robot as if it were running on the same system.

🧪 Option 2: With the Simulator

  • Install the official simulator on your development machine.
  • The simulator replicates the robot’s behavior entirely.
  • You can develop, test, and validate your application without having the robot physically available.

Getting Started

We’ve prepared multiple setup guides to help you get started based on your preferences and system configuration.
➡️ Choose the one that fits your environment and follow the steps to begin development.
